Abstract

The lack of consistency among caries lesions detection systems limits the comparison of results obtained in epidemiological and clinical studies. Therefore, ICDAS was developed to integrate several criteria in a standardized system of caries detection and assessment. However, the activity assessment method associated to the ICDAS not has still validated. Thus, this cohort study will evaluate the predictive and construct validity using an activity assessment criteria associated to the ICDAS in preschool children. Initial clinical examination using ICDAS and an additional to assess caries activity was performed by 15 examiners during the National Vaccination Day, in June 2010. 639 children aged 1 to 5 years were examined. The same children will be re-examined for evaluating conditions related to dental caries by two calibrated examiners during April to August of 2012. To test the predictive validity of the activity assessment system, the premise is that caries lesions classified as active have higher risk to progress than lesions considered inactive. To the evaluate construct validity, the argument that children with great number of active lesions have more risk to develop more new caries lesions will be assessed. For evaluating these hypotheses, relative risk will be calculated through multilevel Poisson regression. (AU)
