Abstract The present project aims to revise the species of Persea that occur in Brazil, which currently covers the recognition of 24 species. For this purpose, the collections of major Brazilian and foreign herbaria will be analyzed in light of nomenclatural types, opera princeps and the specialized literature. Additionally, we intend to investigate the occurrence of species in the field, favoring those that are poorly sampled and/or with absence of complete material in the collections. The proposal is justified due to the latest revision of the American species, held in 1966, being already obsolete and it had not satisfactorily resolved the circumscription of several species, nor presented a functional key for the identification of species. The taxonomic problems that have been already detected from the morphology, and others that will certainly arise from the analysis of the significant higher number of specimens currently available in the collections, will allow that issues such as the specific delimitation of Persea aurata x P. splendens x P. punctata would be better resolved. Likewise, it would be possible to confirm, or not, the taxonomic status of the varieties of Persea fulva, P. fusca and P. pseudofasciculata, as well as the species P. major. (AU) | |
