Abstract

The study of accessory foramen as well as the occasional anatomical variations of the mandible is mandatory for an oral surgeon in order to avoid clinical trouble like hemorrhage and paresthesia. Thus, the object of this piece of work is focused on identifying foramen and accessory canals in the area around the mandibular foramen and among them the Serres's Canal, by analysing their form and prevalence in dry human mandibles. Two hundred mandibles (400 sides) will be studied. A visual survey will be carried out and any openings found around the mandible foramen will be marked. Then the mandibles will be selected according to the following groups: a) presence of bilateral foramen; b) presence of unilateral foramen and c) no one found. Internal diameter, location and number of foramen found on each side will be analysed. Finally a 0,20mm orthodontic flexible cord will be positioned inside the foramen with a wider diameter, in order to check for any canals contiguous to the foramen analysed. Details to be arranged and compared with the literature.
