Abstract

Subproject 1: This study aims to assess root fractures/cracks in CBCT images with and without metalstructures within and outside of the field of view using different devices. An anthropomorphicphantom covered with Mix-D material simulating soft tissue will be manufactured. Three sets willrepresent different clinical conditions: 1. Control group - human mandible free of metal andcontaining fractures/cracks in several teeth; 2. Metallic group - human mandible containing a premolarwith endodontic treatment and intracanal metallic post in its contralateral pre-molar, and severalteeth containing fractures/cracks; 3. Implant group - human mandible with titanium implants andzirconium abutments placed in the region of pre-molars and containing fractures/cracks in severalteeth. For the reference image acquisition, the phantom will be scanned by using an industrial micro-CT device (Nikon XTH 450 Industrial x-ray). For CBCT analysis, the images will be acquired in 12commercial devices selecting 3 different clinical comparable protocols defined for each machine.Image registration will be performed using Amira software, and the analysis will be performed by 3Dentomaxillofacial Radiologists. A visual grading characteristics analysis (VGC) / Forced Choicemethod for diagnostic will be used. The ability to detect root fractures in twelve different CBCTdevices in different simulated clinical situations will be evaluated. Subproject 2: Aims to evaluatethe presence of dentinal microcracks by using nano-CT. Mandibular incisors with a single straight rootcanals and lateral apical foramen will be select after micro-CT scanning at 35 micrometers resolution. Nano-CT scanning at 3 micrometers of voxel size will be performed before preparation for total sample (control group/ n=16) and after the two root canal preparation techniques (n = 8 for each group). The root canals willbe prepared by Reciproc Blue R 40 1 mm short of apical foramen or 1 mm beyond the apical foramen. The presence of microcracks will be evaluated in the apical third (4mm) after image registration(before and after) using Amira software. All stages of this project will be performed in a partnershipproposed with the School of Medicine, KU Leuven, Belgium. The results obtained will be submittedto the proper statistical test. (AU)
