Abstract

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and analysis software have shown great evolution. The aim of this study will be to evaluate the quality of the obturation and dentinal thickness after root canal preparation and retreatment by CBCT using the analysis software e-Vol DX (CDT Software, Bauru, SP, Brazil) in comparison to micro-computed tomography (micro -CT). Subproject 1: Oval root canals of mandibular central incisors (n = 20) will be selected by radiographic and micro-CT analysis. The root canals will be prepared by Reciproc Blue R40 and, after random distribution, they will be filled by the single cone technique with AH Plus or Bio-C Sealer (n = 10). The influence of the Blooming Artifact Reduction (BAR) filter will be evaluated, present in the software e-Vol DX, for detection of voids after obturation of oval root canals in CBCT images and using micro-CT as the gold standard reference, as well as the influence of endodontic sealers with distinct radiopacities (AH Plus or Bio-C Sealer). Subproject 2: Twenty-four mesiobuccal root of the maxillary first molars with two distinct canals, MB1 and MB2, will be selected after radiographic and micro-CT analysis. The MB1 canals (n=24) will be prepared by ProDesign Logic 25.01, 25.05, 30.05 and 35.05 (n=12) or reciprocating system WaveOne Gold Primary (25.07) and Medium (35.06) (n=12). The MB2 canals (n=24) will be prepared by ProDesign Logic 2 25.01, 25.03 and 25.05 (n=12) or reciprocating system WaveOne Gold Primary (25.07) (n=12). Subproject 3: The canals MB1 and MB2 (n=48) will be obturated by the single cone technique with AH Plus. The canals MB1 and MB2 (n=48) will be retreated by ProDesign Logic RT system and additional preparation will be performed with ProDesign Logic 35.05 in the MB1 canals (n=24) and with ProDesign Logic 30.05 in the MB2 canals (n=24). Apical enlargement in the MB1 canals (n=24) will be performed by ProDesign Logic 40.05 and 50.01 and in the MB2 canals (n=24) by ProDesign Logic 2 35.05 and 40.01. The accuracy of a new method for measuring dentinal thickness in CBCT images will be evaluated using the e-Vol DX software in comparation to micro-CT. In addition, the remaining dentin after preparation and after apical enlargement after retreatment will be evaluated using different nickel-titanium instruments in the canals MB1 and MB2 of the maxillary molars. Still, there is the possibility of developing a study using different CBCT devices in association with e-Vol DX software through a partnership with the Catholic University of Leuven - KU Leuven, Belgium (OMFS IMPATH Research Group). The results obtained will be submitted to the proper statistical tests using 5% significance level.
