Abstract

This project aims a comparative study of -mente adverbs through two periods of Portuguese language - Archaic Portuguese (AP), 13th century, and Brazilian Portuguese (BP), 21st century. The focus of this study will be the morphophonological processes produced by -mente suffix attachment to adjectival basis. Through the comparison of these processes in two periods of Portuguese we intend to discuss the question of prosodic status of -mente adverbs as simple forms (one main lexical stress) or compounds (two lexical stresses) and to demonstrate whether the processes that occurred in the formation of these adverbs have changed or have remained in the history of the language. Therefore, the importance of this project consists of researching the prosodic phenomena considering -mente adverbs in AP, period from which it is impossible to find living native speakers. In this way, the methodology is similar to that proposed by Massini-Cagliari in her studies (1995 and 2005) - through the metrified verses where the mapped words appear we can find the poetic stress and, consequently, the word stress, making the investigation of prosodic structure of adverbials forms in Archaic Portuguese easier. Thus, the mapping and the analysis of prosodic phenomena in Portuguese aim to contribute to a more general description of the phonological component in two periods of this language - the moment of Portuguese origin and the contemporary.
