Abstract

Considering the growth of the market for sheep meat, as well as the development of intensive sheep production in Brazil, animal welfare and product quality have become of concern to the production chain. In the process for sheep meat production there is need transport this animals to the slaughter. In addition to direct consequences such as bruises, fractures and dehydration, the transport can lead to stress triggers physiological and behavioral changes, affecting the welfare and health of animals. Stress can be both psychological (fear and apprehension), and physical and also interferes in animal performance and meat quality. In cattle and pig production, whose consumer market values the meat quality, studies show the problem of oxidative and metabolic stress and highlight potential benefits of using antioxidants. This study aims to assess the weight, body condition score, vital functions and study the plasma cortisol, blood counts, biochemical markers (serum lactate L, total protein, albumin, cK, AST, GGT, cholesterol, BUN, creatinine and plasma glucose, NEFA and e ²-hidroxibutirate) and oxidative metabolism in the blood (serum malondialdehyde, erythrocyte superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, total glutathione, reduced glutathione, total antioxidant capacity of serum catalase, reactive oxygen species and FRAP) and the meat quality of lambs subjected to the stress of transportation and check whether there is benefit in the prior administration of two doses of vitamin E.
