Abstract

The objective of this Project is to catalogue the paintings, sculptures, carvings and architecture details of the Matriz Nova, today known as Catedral Metropolitana of Campinas, between the years 1840 to 1923. This Project is of great importance to the current knowledge of the 19th century art and the history life of Campinas, transforming the knowledge of the past into knowledge for the future. At the present moment the art collection of the Catedral has not been cataloged and the Museum Arquidiocesano collection is totally unknown. This research will have an impact both for the academic knowledge and the community, specially for the Museu Arquediocesano which is currently open to the public without any information about it´s art collection. The acquisition of paintings and carving works done by well recognized artisans such as José Barandier, whose came from the French mission to Brasil and Vitoriano do Anjos, master of carving from the refined renscentis art of Bahia connect us to an European past of colonization. Refined Baroque sculptures originated from Europe, with golden ornaments and polychromic work show us that people's faith in that period led them to acquire the best art for their temples. The furniture in Luiz XV style is rich of golden details but still has no documentation about it´s origin. Silverware and crystals works of the collection were part of the rich farmers´ houses in Campinas. This collection must be studied and preserved by means of an academic methodology in accordance to countries with a vast experience in museology. It is therefore necessary a proper methodology to collect relevant data in the history of art field as well as a proper methodology on how to treat that data. It is of great importance that this research may be able to produce a foundation to other specific researches about each piece of the collection and that the history of Campinas and the Catedral Metropolitana be preserved.
