Abstract

The biological monitoring of chemical elements provides vital importance in assessing human health because people are exposed daily to a huge number of chemicals and their metabolites. Studies of human biomonitoring deal with the comparison of the concentration found of substances present in human tissues or fluids with the value of concentration of these substances which are expected to find in a population not exposed, or that is, make a comparison with the reference value (RV). The concept of reference value was proposed in order to establish a terminology more appropriate and intent to interpret correctly the data of clinical chemical and its use has great value in the assessment of health risks, underscoring the type and magnitude of the exposure of a certain population to a chemical element. The use of these values without the knowledge of literal aspects such as the characteristics of the element in question, of the population and the exposure, may create a mistaken estimate of the risk. Given the non-availability of RVs for chemical elements in Brazil, the most common in the analysis of the data of the Brazilian studies is the comparison of the results obtained with the values laid down in other countries, showing the need to draw up own values and characteristic of Brazilian people. So this project aims to establish reference values in urine for essential and non-essential chemical elements in Brazilian children (6-14 years).
