Abstract

The drug effect can have the action potential increased through the development of new releasing systems such as the mucoadhesive. Those remain close to the absorption tissues, to the mucous membranes, releasing the drug at the site of action, consequently increasing the bioavailability and promoting local and systemic effects. At the present, mucoadhesion is explained in six theories: the electronic, the adsorption, the wettability, the diffusion, the fracture and the mechanical theories (Carvalho et al., 2010). In 2011 Kloster et al. developed an antimicrobial buccal plaster and tested its efficiency on the culture of some buccal bacteria (S. mutans e C. albicans) which presented promising results. The present study aims to analyze the functional and biochemical features of the antimicrobial buccal plaster concerning: the salivary environment degradation; the composition adjustment for improving the adherence to the buccal mucous membrane; the performance as to the controlled releasing of drugs; water absorption while analyzing the mass loss; pH measurements of the residual liquid in different periods of time within 30 days; the plaster cytotoxicity in cell and gingival fibroblast culture. Considering those analyses, it's aimed to develop a buccal plaster with functional and biochemical features which could be used both in soft tissues and in mineralized tissues.
