Abstract

Water is an essential factor for maintaining the vital functions of living beings. It has been observed a growing commitment of its quality due to pollution from many sources and even entire watersheds, whether its by industrial waste, sewage, or, by substances used in agriculture such as pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers. For over 50 years, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is used worldwide, among these uses, one was its use as one of the compounds of "Agent Orange" used in the Vietnam War. Due to the fact that its genotoxicity and its long persistence in soil have been proved by several studies, which allows the leaching and percolation of the compound affecting water bodies, studies of its toxicity are relevant and justifiable. Fishes are excellent experimental models for studies of aquatic toxicology, since they warn about the potential danger of chemicals or the possibility of environmental pollution. Given the above, this project aims to determine the consequences of the presence of the commercial herbicide 2,4-D in the aquatic environment, using gills of Oreochromis niloticus (Nile tilapia), by ultra-morphology, histological and histochemical analyses.
