Abstract

Despite all the successes of QCD as the quantum field theory of the strong interactions, high-energy hadronic \textit{elastic} scattering states do not have a formal description from first principles and still constitute a great challenge for QCD. As a consequence theoretical investigations are stillrather phenomenological. New data on the elastic proton-proton (pp) collisions at the Large Hadron Collider that have been obtained by the TOTEM Collaboration areexpected to bring new insights for the necessary development of the theory in the soft sector (elastic and dissociative scattering), confinement and nonperturbative QCD. In this project, based on the new data obtained by the TOTEM Collaboration, we propose: (1) studies on analytic descriptions of the pp and antiproton-phadronic cross sections (total, elastic, inelastic) in terms of the energy at the LHC and asymptotic regions; (2) development of model-independent analytic parametrizations for the pp differential cross section data from 20 GeVup to 8 TeV; (3) discussions and interpretation of the results obtainedand their implications in the phenomenological context.
