Abstract

Recent papers using Doppler ultrasound have been shown that most vascularized pre-ovulatory follicles are responsible by higher pregnancy rates. As well, the increased blood flow in the uterus can result in higher fetal survival rates. Studies indicate that the amino acid L-arginine may increase the ovarian and uterine blood flow and may improve fertility rates. Thus, stimulating studies have been done, bringing the clinical use of Doppler closer to reality. At the same time, the aged animals reproduction has become a major challenge in equine reproduction due to the achievement of low conception and embryo recovery rates. The purpose of this study is to compare the follicular, luteal and uterine vascularization of young and old mares to determine if there are differences in blood flow in animals of different ages. Moreover, to evaluate the effect of supplementation with L-arginine on the follicular, luteal and uterine vascularization in young and old mares, based on the hypothesis that this amino acid may increase blood flow.
