Abstract AbstractThis project gives an account at the cultural effervescence of the year 1960, in Recife, in the perspective conveyed by sections of the intelligentsia and the local student movement, gathered in the Popular Culture Movement, MCP. We intend to discuss the political and social context of Pernambuco, as a contribution to the analysis of this period of political and cultural history of Brazil. Assuming that artists and intellectuals of the MCP, coming from many leftists who formed the front of Recife (Catholic, social democratic, labor and communist), eventually developed political and cultural actions and interests that did not correspond to direct political factions of his party, due to direct contact with the grassroots communities. Drawing on access that only recently become possible to a unexplored documentation on the MCP, we will investigate the specificities, debates and contradictions of the movement. We try to show that the plurality of political and cultural perspectives of intellectuals and their leaders gathered in the MCP and internal tensions challenged the attempt at political exploitation of it by one or other of the political forces of the "Frente do Recife", giving new meanings to those cultural activities. | |
