Abstract

The project proposes a case study on the initiative of a pre-university course, cost-free and destined for public school students, organized by Rede Emancipa. Rede Emancipa is a social movement composed by students from public universities - many of them originated from public schools - that organize these "popular prep courses" in Sao Paulo, Campinas, Belém do Pará and Porto Alegre as a way of expanding the access of lower classes students to the Brazilian public universities. The study addresses the largest initiative of a "popular prep course", organized in a municipal school in the northern region of the city of Sao Paulo. The research will investigate the social construction of school dispositions and cultural practices both among students and among teachers of the initiative, by tracing the processes of family socialization and schooling that characterize the social origin and trajectory of these individuals, as well as through researching the experience of such individuals in the focused "popular prep course" .Thus, the study is aimed to investigate the specific conditions of access to higher education among young people from social classes characterized by low volumes of economic and cultural capital. The case study will be conducted through: a) document analysis and interviews with the founders of Rede Emancipa for retracing the history of the social movement and to characterize its political and pedagogical ideas. b-)surveys with teachers and students;-c) reconstruction of the trajectory of students and teachers - selected from sociological profiles built upon the results of the surveys - through in-depth interviews with these individuals and their parents-d) etnographical observation of classes and activities conducted in the "popular prep course".
