Abstract

The literature has pointed out that the end of the Cold War brought serious implications for the definition of American national interest (HUNTINGTON, 1997a, NYE, 1999, RICE, 2000; NUECHTERLEIN, 2001). In a context marked by the absence of vital threats, the United States would be less associated with promoting national interests in their agenda of security and, on the other hand, more linked to economic and trade and ethnic and humanitarian issues. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to assess whether the absence of a vital threat to U.S. security in the post-Cold War would have led to a redefinition of the agenda of "national interests" by the U.S. government, having as parameter the framework of national interests in the National Security Strategy of the Reagan, Bush and Clinton governments.
