Abstract

Political Economy, 1795, by Manuel Joaquim Rebelo, is a manual of political economy, as the tittle states, published only in 1821, though it's writing began before 1789. It stands out for its high or theoretical depth if compared with peers Portuguese authors, because, it develops themes such as: composition of the value of goods, the organization of civil society and the freedom to trade as the core of the development of the State. Author and book remained in the oblivion of the historians until the eighties of the twentieth century. This research aims to resume the theoretical analysis of the book and its author, his insertion in the context of Portuguese thinkers of the late eighteenth century, his similarities and differences, in particular, the distinction and theoretical development when comparing him to his Portuguese peers on economic thought.
