Abstract

Mastitis is inflammation of the mammary gland, characterized as the most common infectious disease in dairy cattle. This disease causes severe losses, both by the drop in milk production and the quality of milk produced, as the increase in the cost of treatments, and the early disposal of cows who have chronic cases of mastitis. The main agents of contagious mastitis are Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae and Mycoplasma spp .. Intramammary infection caused by this agent may become a serious problem for dairy herds. It is difficult to treat because the microorganisms are resistant to most antimicrobials used and can become chronic mastitis and high somatic cell count (SCC). In most studies with mastitis, it is reported prevalence of agents such as Streptococcus agalactiae and Staphylococcus aureus, because these agents can be isolated and identified by conventional microbiological methods, however, Mycoplasma bovis requires special conditions. Thus, it is believed that the true prevalence of Mycoplasma bovis is probably underestimated Thus, this study aims to isolate and characterize genotype strains of Mycoplasma bovis from milk samples, thereby determining the actual prevalence of this agent in milk and teats of animals with mastitis, and the study of the etiology of mastitis based on the main infectious agents causing Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus agalactiae.
