Abstract

Medulloblastoma (MB) is a embryonic neuroepithelial tumor that represents approximately 16 to 25% of all central nervous system tumors of childhood. Resistance to treatment and recurrence of the tumor are often associated with the presence of tumor stem cells, which are determinants of poor prognosis. The MB has its origin in the cerebellum and is derived from cerebellar granule cell precursors, with the appearance of stem or progenitor cells. Like stem cells, tumor cells are widely considered able to proliferate indefinitely, a capability that is caused by dysregulation of key signaling pathways. These pathways have a role in the development, for example, the Hedgehog (Hh), Wnt and Notch pathways. Recent studies have revealed that the prognosis and treatment of MB depend on the origin of tumor cells, pathways and genes involved in activation and deactivation of these cells. Thus, current targeted therapies have been based on small molecules for specific signaling pathways altered in the oncogenic process of MB.This study will investigate the gene expression profile of GLI1, PTCH1, CTNNB1, APC, HES1 and NOTCH2 genes in 40 samples of MB and the molecular findings will be correlated to the clinical data of patients.
