Abstract

Detailed visual indices, as Nyvad's criteria and ICDAS + LAA, have proved validity and reproducibility for caries detection in primary teeth. However, the criterion validity has been performed with methyl red dye, which may be underestimating caries activity. To confirm the validity and corroborate or refute the hypothesis regarding this dye, the present project proposes evaluating the predictive validity of these visual indices in primary teeth. For that, 139 patients, who participated in previous research conducted by Braga et al. (2010), will have their occlusal surfaces of primary molars re-scored using these indices. Variables associated with caries activity and similar to those collected in original study will also collect. ROC analysis will be performed and calculation of parameters related to the validity (sensitivity, specificity and accuracy) considering two outcomes (sound teeth + inactive lesions vs. active lesions and inactive lesions vs. active lesions) and using as reference standard the progression or not of caries lesions initially examined. Multilevel analysis will be performed to verify the association between caries activity and tooth and child's variables in the past (original study) or recently (this study). Validity parameters calculated for this study and for the previous study will be compared by McNemar test. (AU)
