Abstract

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (TEAF) has broad clinical variability - physical, behavioral, cognitive and language - so that individuals can be classified by the diagnosis of fetal alcohol syndrome or effect of alcohol. Preliminary findings of our team showed that this variability is also observed for the frequency and type of disfluencies in oral narrative, suggesting heterogeneity of the group investigated. On the other hand, the recurrence of high frequency of hesitation and pauses, compared to the chronological age control group, was suggestive of story generation dificulties. Narrative performance task has helped to identify clinical subgroups that have language disorder. Thus, the aim of this study is to characterize the oral narrative (history generation) of individuals with TEAF, classified as FAS and FAE and compare with each other and their respective chronological age controls group in the dimensions of the macrostructure and the microstructure of the narrative. Twenty individuals with TEAF (10 with FAS and 10 with FAE) will be assessed, both genders and chronological age between 6 and 14 years old, which will be compared to controls with typical language development, according to gender and chronological age. The narrative will be elicited with the wordless book story "Frog where are you?" and analyzed for macrostructure parameters (typicals narrative history elements) and microstructure (productivity and linguistic complexity). The data will be analyzed using descriptive and comparative statistics methods. Results could better characterize language difficulties presentd by individuals with TEAF,and also identifying peculiarities of oral narrative that can be used as identification of TEAF sub-clinical groups.Key word: language, story generation, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder
