Abstract

In the production of Portland cement and lime is a large release of CO2 into the atmosphere. An alternative found by the cement industry to lower the costs, raw materials, environmental pollution and also improve product characteristics is the use of agro-industrial wastes and partial replacement of clinker in cement. An example is the ash residue from the burning of biomass for clean energy. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the feasibility of using elephant grass ashes from the production of energy as an active pozzolan partial replacement of Portland cement. The work will be developed at the Laboratory of Construction and Environment, Faculdade de Zootecnia e Engenharia de Alimentos FZEA / USP with the grass Pennisetum purpureum Schum cv. Cameroon. Different treatments will be applied for the extraction of potassium before and after burning the material. Among the treatments, one will be chosen. The treated ash will be characterized as for their chemical, physical, mineralogical and mechanical properties. Folders will be produced with the addition of elephant grass ashes for evaluating pozzolanic activity in the cement matrix.
