Abstract

The growing global concern for sustainability has motivated the adoption of biofuels as a partial substitute for gasoline in transportation. Bioethanol has been successfully introduced in the Brazilian energy matrix and there is expectance of exportation of surplus production in the coming years. The United States represents a potential market because they are the largest consumers of oil in the world, but their protectionist policy has hampered the importation of bioethanol. The objective of this study is to prospect the demand for fuel in Brazil and the United States to verify the potential of Brazilian exports to that country by the year 2022. On the other hand, the supply potential of Brazilian ethanol, relative to key resources used in its production, will be mapped. A literature review of policies concerning the two countries and the factors that drive adoption of ethanol will be done. Data about expected demand will be collected from research institutions in the area. Considering the information obtained, the bioethanol demand in both countries for the period studied will be prospected. Finally, these activities will be confronted with the potential Brazilian supply.
