Abstract

Aerosol particles play an important role in the radiation balance of the atmosphere by scattering and absorption of incident sunlight. However, there remain significant uncertainties as to the action of these aerosols and radiative forcing. Therefore, it is crucial to an accurate determination of the optical properties of these aerosols to reduce such uncertainties. This project aims, using a direct absorption technique known as Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy, determine the optical characteristics of aerosols due to its high sensitivity and versatility compared to traditional techniques of spectroscopy.
