Abstract

The prostate is an exclusive gland of mammals' reproductive tract whose secretion is associated with the maintenance and maturation of the spermatozoids allowing reproductive success. Its development takes place from an undifferentiated mesenchymal tissue named urogenital sinus (UGS), where initiates the process of prostate morphogenesis that is finely regulated by androgens and estrogens. Although there is several information regarding prostatic organogenesis in rodents such as rats and mice, nothing was described on this matter for the Mongolian gerbil. Thus, considering that the employment of this animal model in studies with reproductive interest has been increased lately, the detailed knowledge of the events that occur during prostatic organogenesis is needed to improve our understanding of the mechanisms involved in this gland formation. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate the patterns of budding and branching of the ventral lobe from the 17th embryonic day to the first postnatal day in male gerbils. To this, the reproductive tract of these animals will be dissected and processed for paraffin inclusion. In addition, the slides will be subjected to cytochemical and immunohistochemical techniques, being further destined for general morphological analyses and also for the characterization of the buds number in each phase of the development. From the obtained results, we aim to obtain the exact description of the event's evolution of the prostatic organogenesis in these animals, which can contribute to improving our understanding of the mechanisms involved in the development of this gland.(AU)
