Abstract

The epidemiology of breast cancer in Brazil and the world is well defined, pointing to high rates of incidence and mortality rates, accounting for breast cancer the second most common form of cancer worldwide. Dietary components are also involved in the etiology of breast cancer risk factors are considered high intake of fats and meats, to the detriment of low intake of fruits, vegetables, and fiber. Besides the impact of fats on the development of breast cancer, recent decades have been discussing the association of glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) with this type of cancer. Although there is no consensus in the scientific, the IG and CG have demonstrated a negative association with the prevention and control of chronic diseases, among them obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and cancer. The present study aims to evaluate the impact of glycemic index and glycemic load on the diet of women with breast cancer under chemotherapy. It is a desk study in which 25 patients attending the Department of the Hospital AC Camargo Mastology have chips food chemistry evaluated, these being from the 24-hour dietary recalls generated by Food Processor software. The original study comprised three periods, prior chemotherapy (T0), the period during therapy (T1), and post-chemotherapy (T2). IG and CG will be determined for each meal separately and complete diet in order to have knowledge of the individual contribution of each meal for the IG and CG of the total diet, both diets are considered appropriate with a low GI and CG. These values will be analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 19.0 to determine the association between IG and CG and disease progression and symptoms during chemotherapy, in addition to testing the hypothesis that high values for these parameters also can act favoring tumor recurrence after treatment completion.(AU)
