Abstract

According to the World Health Organization, malnourishment is a worldwide health problem that affects approximately 30% of world population in some degree. Malnourishment modifies the production of hematopoietic cells compromising, in this way, immunity. It also influences the capability of mesenchymal stem cells to differentiate in other parenchymal cell types, compromising the generation of a supportive parenchyma necessary for hematopoietic stem cell homeostasis. It is known that glutamine has immunomodulatory properties which benefit immune responses. In pathological conditions, this aminoacid can became essential to the organism. Knowing the importance of mesenchymal stem cells in sustaining hematopoiesis, this work aims to evaluate the influence of glutamine on immunomodulatory properties of mesenchymal stem cells under malnourishment state. In order to accomplish this, we use an experimental in vivo model of malnourishment previously developed in our lab.
