Abstract

The visual evoked potential is an electrophysiological test that captures and records the electrical activity originated at the retina to the occipital cortex in response to a specific visual stimulus. This test can be used to assist the diagnosis of neurological disorders, especially those related to the optic nerve and central visual pathways. The visual evoked potential in dogs, horses and sheep is similar to the observed in human beings. Each laboratory needs to obtain normative data for the use of visual evoked potential in order to use in routine examinations. The aim of this study is to acquire basic information in order to optimize the use of visual potential in dogs, horses and sheep with normal vision and characterize the latencies and amplitudes of generated waves , providing the basis to study the ocurrence of neurological problems related to visual pathways in these species.
