Abstract

The family Anostomidae has a wide Neotropical distribution and has 138 species distributed in 12 genera. The Anostomídeos occupy the major basins of South America. This family appears to be monophyletic. Several attempts to define the subfamilies were unsuccessful. Within the family Anostomidae, the genus Leporinus is the most specious (87 valid species). All species of the genus have the same chromosome formula, but there is a system of sex chromosomes ZZ/ZW described for seven species that comprise a natural group. Another ZW sex chromosome system was described only for Leporinus geminis. The Leporinus species with ZW chromosomes have an interesting distribution, being represented in almost all major river basins of Brazil. Our first objective is to reconstruct the phylogenetic relationships among the different genera of the family Anostomidae and between different species of the genus Leporinus. To assess the monophyly of the group of species with sex chromosomes ZZ/ZW as well as the origin of new sex chromosomes described for Leporinus geminis. It will be also assessed the functionality of DNA barcodes for species of the family Anostomidae. Another objective is to assess the phylogeographic pattern of distribution of species of the genus Leporinus that have sex chromosomes ZZ/ZW.
