Abstract

Celastraceae has ca. 1000 species with global distribution, predominantly tropical. Maytenus is the major genus in Neotropic with ca. 200 species, 80 of them occurring in Brazil. The species present low variability on reproductive characters and the identification is, usually, made on vegetative characters like branches and leaves. There is a lack of knowledge of species, especially the Amazonian. This project proposes the elaboration of synopsis of species of South America realizing typifications and synonymities and presenting keys of identification, maps of distribution, diagnostic characters, illustrations and others relevant considerations. Joined to this revision a phylogeny will be realized through molecular data and will be useful to clarify the position of species within genus, and the relation between them. The phylogenetic analysis will serve for propose a new infrageneric classification, since the others proposes are not-monophyletic. The phylogenetic works will characterize natural groups, synopomorphies and questions regarding "complex" of species. (AU)
