Abstract

Celeus is the woodpecker genus less studied of the Neotropics. It has a complex taxonomic history, marked by the description of several subspecies due to the great geographic variation present in the genus. There is no agreement between the several authors who studied the genus about the number of its species. These factors allied with the almost completely lack of osteological and bioacoustics studies and the inexistence of a taxonomic review using the Phylogenetic Species Concept, make this study relevant for biogeography and conservation purposes. The main goals of this study are to review the taxonomic status of the genus Celeus, defining the number of its species, describe the geographic variation eventually found in some species and conduct a osteological and bioacustic analysis, investigating their applicability on the taxonomy of the genus. To achieve these goals, morphological (plumage color), morphometrics (wing, tail and bill length and width), osteological (skull and other bones) and bioacoustics analysis will be conducted. (AU)
