Abstract

The constant need to obtain and process information in the organizational context and the growing awareness in society about the need to protect the environment have made information systems (IS) and environmental management (GA) issues relevant. However, usually these two subjects are treated by specialists alone, but require an integrated and synergistic. Therefore, this research aims to examine the challenges and opportunities related to the interaction between environmental management and information systems, analyzing the contributions of SI for the GA. The theoretical discourses on environmental management and practices in organizations such as ISO 14001, and the importance of IS in organizations, as well as aspects such as barriers and benefits of its implementation. Thus, the proposed methodology of work is a case study of two companies certified with ISO 14001, checking each case separately and then crossing the analyzed data. Data will be collected through scripts of interviews, document review, analysis and observation of current projects, and where the triangulation of sources of evidence necessary to give strength to those cases. It is hoped that this work can bridge the gap in the literature regarding this topic, and may provide for organizations, guidelines for a better use of the relationship between IS and GA. It is intended to disseminate the results of this research through trial published in a scientific journal. The project gains importance due to the constant argument in the National Environmental Education in Brazil, which affirms the need to incorporate environmental concerns in the content of the classical disciplines of undergraduate courses, as is the theme of information systems.
