Abstract Introduction: Complete edentulism is an important public health problem, with high prevalence among the Brazilian elderly population. Overdentures retained by two conventional implants have been considered as the standard of care for complete edentulism. Nevertheless, a large number of patients refuse that treatment modality due to associated costs and post surgical discomfort. Mini implants have great potential to overcome those limitations, as long as they are potentially less expensive than conventional implants. Moreover, they can be inserted by means of relatively simple operative procedures. Objectives: To compare implant and overdenture success rate, quality of prostheses and costs involved in treatment with mandibular overdentures retained by mini implants with those held by conventional implants, through a randomized, parallel-group clinical trial. Methods: The study sample will consist of 120 edentulous participants will receive one of three interventions in the mandibular anterior region: (1) four mini-implants, (2) two mini-implants, and (3) two conventional implants as a control. In this proposal, we will evaluate implant and overdenture success rate, quality of prostheses and cost of treatment over a period of 6 months. | |
