Abstract

The native species of the Indo-West Pacific Charybdis hellerii inhabits coral reefs, rocky shores and mangroves. With the opening of the Suez Canal this species has spread to the Mediterranean Sea, and in 1987, it was first recorded for the western Atlantic. Currently, this species has been recorded for several coastal areas of the Caribbean and Brazil, where populations are already established, as occurs in the São Paulo (Brazil) coast. It is believed that the introduction of this invader in the Americas would have occurred by vessels from the Mediterranean. However, more detailed information about the input events are not known, for example, if these events were multiple or not, and if the population of the Caribbean and Brazil have zones of independent source. Thus, by analyzing the degree of genetic variability of populations C. hellerii and determining the genetic structure of this species, the aim of this project is to generate inferences about its history of invasion, dispersal and genetic composition of populations, using molecular analysis for this purpose with two appropriate molecular markers (16S rDNA and COI) and nuclear (H3). Additionally, through the comparison of specimens based on data available in literature and on search of new characters, this study seeks to obtain information about the morphological variations of individuals of this species throughout its distribution.
