Abstract

The Environmental Protection Areas (EPA) born to promote the conservation of the environment as well as improving the living conditions of the population in a sustainable manner. The coast of São Paulo has an almost continuous mosaic of conservation units and can be deployed to the South coast marine APA (APAMLC) and Environmental Protection Area of Cananéia, Iguape and Peruíbe (APA CIP). The mouth of the Rio Ribeira de Iguape is into the interface of these protected areas, being close to the APA Long Island, southeast, and the Juréia-Itatins north. Its recognized the history of metal contamination in the Rio Ribeira de Iguape due to disposal of waste from the exploration of lead, as well as the transport of contaminants to the coastal region, where there is deposition of contaminants on sediments, which turn can cause toxicity to benthic organisms and cause ecological risks to lives. So, the objective of this study is to evaluate the sediment quality in the region of the mouth of the river's natural Ribeira de Iguape through sedimentological analyzes and ecotoxicity tests full of sediment. Will be used for such organisms sensitive to contaminants. In an acute toxicity test is used amphipod Tiburonella viscana excavator, for testing the chronic copepod benthic Tisbe biminiensis, both conducted in accordance with international protocols. If it is evident toxicity in the samples is evaluated with respect to its particle size and concentration of organic carbon, since preliminary data indicate that the metal entering the system from particulates. The results of this project should provide information on the influence of activities upstream of the river, on the environmental quality of different UC, assisting in the management of these units and the development of policies aimed at environmental conservation.
