Abstract

We will study the longitudinal relaxation rate of a probe at a distance R from a magnetic impurity in a nonmagnetic host. A special geometry will be considered, the impurity at a distance d from the metallic surface. At low temperatures, the antiferromagnetic interaction between the impurity and the conduction electron gives rise to the Kondo effect, a narrow resonance centered at the Fermi level. On intuitive grounds, we expect the relaxation rate to depend on the ratio between d and R and hence to give direct information on the spatial structure of the screening cloud around the impurity.
