Abstract

The simulation of fluid flows with free surfaces has gained importance over the last years due to the many practical applications in which this kind of flow is involved. The simulation of fluid flows with free surfaces involves considerable numeric and computational difficulties, since, besides solving the Navier-Stokes equations, which by itself represents a considerable challenge, it is also necessary to represent correctly the domain, given it is variable with time. In the computational fluid mechanics group of USP at São Carlos, we have been working in this subject since 1993 and a considerable amount of knowledge has been gained. In these years of work, a simulation system of free surface fluid flows in three dimensions has been produced (FREEFLOW3D), along with many publications in renowned magazines and the formation of a good number of masters and doctors. The FREEFLOW3D system is based on the GENSMAC methodology, which is a very efficient methodology for the treatment of fluid flows with free surfaces, specially for the treatment of complex geometries. However, the GENSMAC methodology has some deficiencies related specifically to the order of precision on the free surface and its parallelization. In this work, the student will study, modify and implement modifications of the GENSMAC methodology related to the finite difference discretization of the governing equations, one of the most important steps in the GENSMAC algorithm. This modification will be based on the Immerse Boundaries methodology. (AU)
