Abstract

This project aims to analyze how the establishment and operation of the Holly Office of the Inquisition for indigenous in New Spain was related to the missionary project of the first evangelists. The inquisitorial inquiries are commonly distinguished from inquisitorial missional action, appearing as an ecclesiastical institution detached from the labor of the evangelization. The hypothesis we support, however, is that there is a close dependency between the Inquisition for indigenous and the missionary evangelists in the early colonial Mexico. We intend, from the various inquisitorial process, carried out almost entirely by the first bishop and inquisitor of Mexico Juan de Zumarraga, to find the connections that linked the inquisitorial practices and the conception of the evangelists. This way, we'll map trends that guided the conduct of the missionaries in Mexico in its various manifestations, the result of humanist reformism sixteenth-century Spain mainly in its utopian and messianic character, confronting them with the peculiar performance of the Inquisition, between the years 1521 and 1571. Therefore, we wonder how the traces of inquisitorial practices are inserted in the evangelizing process of the indigenous population.
