Abstract

The ictiofauna from Neotropical Region is the richest in the Word. Among 13,000 estimated freshwater fish species, about 6,000 are found in the Neotropical Region and some estimative suggest that this number may reach 8,000 species. Recent studies have proposed the use of the mitochondrial gene Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) as a global system for identification of all living species. Considering the satisfactory results obtained for several animal groups with the use of the sequences of the gene COI, the present project has as the main objective to test the hypotheses that it is possible identify molecularly the species of a speciose fish group, in the present case the subfamily Corydoradinae, using the DNA barcode technique. To test this hypotheses we pretend sequence a segment of the gene COI of 5 specimens of at least 100 species of the subfamily Corydoradinae and, based on the observed genetic variability, identify the limit values among genera and species. For those species with large geographic distribution we intent to analyze the largest possible number of samples, aiming to evaluate the genetic variability of them and if necessary to suggest the description of new species. With the generate data we also intent to create a database to permit a molecular identification of the studied specimens.
