Abstract

Callichthyidae comprises a well-corroborated monophyletic group, belonging to the superfamily Loricarioidei, which is divided in two subfamilies: Corydoradinae and Callichthyinae, also considered monophyletic based on morphological and molecular characters. All the genera of the family are monophyletic, with the exception of Corydoras. Corydoradinae represents 90% of diversity in Callichthyidae, with more than 170 valid species, besides the news ones annually described. A recent proposal, based on molecular data, showed that Corydoradinae subfamily is divided in nine genetic lines, possibly genera. Moreover, it was shown that the species belonging to each of the proposal lines present extensive modifications in the genome size, including diploid, tetraploid, and octaploid species. Considering that the extreme variations in DNA content can imply in significant alterations in the spermatozoa structure in Corydoradinae, the present project intends to analyze the morphology of the male reproductive system and the morphometry of the spermatozoa from representatives of the nine genetic lines identified, looking for specific reproductive characteristics that support each one of the lines currently propose. The obtained data can give support to define these new lines in Corydoradinae, representing additional evidences that support these groups, characterizing the real dimension of diversity of species found in this subfamily. Furthermore, these data will be essential to understand the process of chromatin condensation in species with different genome sizes and in the alterations of the reproductive characters associated to these alterations in DNA content.
