Abstract

During the first century of Brazilian printing industry, the letterpress printing system overwhelmingly dominated the reproduction of books, newspapers, magazines, etc. Despite the existence of investigations that cover the production and development of graphic technology in the country over the years, little is known about the form of printed elements in this period: typefaces, ornaments, vignettes, symbols, among others. By examining the type specimens published by Funtimod, a leading Brazilian type founder of the twentieth century, the research project proposed here intends to survey the typefaces that were then available for printing, and therefore contribute to the setting of a Brazilian typographic history.
