Abstract

The aquaculture is a growing and important sector of food production in expansion, mainly the production of tilapia. This intensification of production has some limiting factors, among them, the occurrence of bacteria. The bacteria from Aeromonas gender are amongst the most common in freshwaters habitats. For the bacteriosis control several groups of antibiotics are used, nevertheless, the intensive use of these chemical products can cause negatives impacts to the aquatic environment. The azithromycin, which is a broad spectrum antimicrobial agent, has been studied lately. The knowledge of its active ingredient, mechanism of action, formulation and its form of appliance in food is essential, due to its biological activity, which can interfere in specific biological systems. Therefore, with the increase of the fish farms and the increase of the antibiotic use, it is necessary to know the unexpected effects that this antibiotic can cause. Accordingly to the exposed above, the aim of this study is to evaluate the toxicity of the antibiotic Azithromycin estimating the acute toxicity (CL50;48h) to fingerlings of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus); and the effects of chronic toxicity to juvenile of tilapia (O. niloticus) evaluating the histopathological alterations in gills, liver, kidney and skin , the metabolic answers of tilapia (O. niloticus) and the changes in the innate immune response, such as differential count of leukocytes, lysozyme quantification and the complement system .
