Abstract

The main oncology treatment modality, antineoplastic chemotherapy, is frequently accompanied by side effects, including peripheral neuropathy. More than 30% of the patients that received specific types of chemotherapy developed Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN). This document is a proposal for a methodological study to realize translation, cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy Assessment Tool (CIPNAT) for people diagnosed with cancer and development of CIPN. It is intended to provide a reliable and valid instrument adapted to Brazilian culture and focused on oncology nursing. The development is desired to be at the Cancer Institute of the State of São Paulo (ICESP) and the Center of Clinical Oncology Chemotherapy Institute of Radiology at the Clinic Hospital, Medical School of USP, seeking to achieve a sample greater than or equal to 60 patients in pre-test and approximately 200 cancer patients, with clinical manifestations of CIPN, in the validation process. The processing and data analysis will be performed by SPSS version 16.0. The descriptive measures will be compared to a Brazilian adapted CIPNAT questionnaire through variability (standard, minimum and maximum deviation), central tendency (mean and median) and psychometric test to validate the instrument and verify the presence of floor and ceiling effect. The internal consistency of the instrument items will be measured by Cronbach's alpha calculation, factorial analysis with Varimax rotation to test the construct validity and Student t test for discriminant validity.
