Abstract

Gene expression is intrinsically a stochastic process due to the small number of molecules of the same species involved in the regulation of a gene or a gene network. The increase in processing power and the appearance of super computers has enabled complex simulations involving a large number of chemical reactions in the cells. As an alternative to numerical investigations, phenomenological models can be used to understand the main aspects of gene expression. A first approach in this direction was the use of the Langevin mechanism where the fluctuations, or noise, are introduced as a stochastic perturbation. A second strategy is the use of master equations that describe the dynamical behavior of the probability distribution which characterizes the system. In this project we will adopt master equations to model a single gene with three states of transcriptional efficiency, for two different cases: the self-regulating gene and the externally regulated gene.
