Correlation between neuropsychiatric symptoms and cortical thickness in patients with Alzheimer's Disease

Abstract

Neuropsychiatric symptoms in dementia due to Alzheimer's disease (DAD) are highly prevalent and they affect directly the quality of life of patients and relatives, since they are the main causes of burden to the caregivers. Because of these aspects and considering the perspective to better understand the relationship between brain anatomy and psychopathology, we aim to correlate the intensity of neuropsychiatric symptoms (by using the Neuropsychiatric Inventory) and measures of whole-brain cortical thickness (obtained by Magnetic Resonance Imaging - MRI). Therefore, we will evaluate 50 individuals older than 50 years - being 25 patients with mild or moderated DAD, treated at the Neuropsychology and Dementia outpatient clinic (Unicamp University Hospital), and 25 normal control individuals, paired by gender, age and educational level. All subjects will undergo a comprehensive battery of neuropsychological tests, as well as a 3 T MRI scans. The statistical analysis will be performed in FreeSurfer software. (AU)
