Abstract

Seed treatment consists in an alternative to provide nutrients to the crops, allowing an uniform distribution of elements required at low levels, as zinc and copper. The supply of those micronutrients is crucial on the achievement of higher yields for maize crop (Zea mays L.) in Brazil, due to the low levels of those elements in soils destined for this crop in the country. This study aims to verify the effects of maize seed treatment with zinc oxide (ZnO) and copper carbonate (CuCO3) on seed quality and initial development of corn plants. Thus, seeds of the hybrid 2B688Hx differing in size and vigor will be used, with two lots containing seeds size 24, with higher and lower vigor, and two lots containing seeds size 20, also with higher and lower vigor. The treatments will consist of two doses of ZnO + CuCO3, two doses of ZnO, two doses of CuCO3 and non-treated. Seed quality will be assessed along five periods by germination test, first count of germination, seedling emergence on sand, seedling emergence index, computer analysis of seedlings (SVIS®) and cold test. On the first period of evaluation, the dry matter of seedlings roots and aerial part will be weighted, followed by the determination of zinc and copper content on those tissues. The data will provide information about the effects of corn seed treatment with zinc and copper, allowing the comparison of results obtained from lots with different seed sizes and physiological potential.
