Abstract We propose to conduct a collaborative research that explores spin-dependent properties in systems with reduced dimensionality: from semiconductor quantum wells and quantum dots, to intrinsically two-dimensional graphene. The motivation for this effort, which will provide the core PhD thesis research for Mr. Paulo Eduardo de Faria Junior, is twofold. On the one hand the understanding of fundamental properties such as spin relaxation and spin transport is interesting by itself. Unlike charge, spin is a non-conserved quantity due to spin-orbit and hyperfine coupling which provides additional challenges to study spin relaxation and spin transport. Revealing the electronic structure in the systems of interest, comprised of Si, Ge, graphene, or III-V semiconductors, provides already important clues and guidance for many spin-dependent properties. On the other hand such knowledge of spin relaxation and spin transport could enable novel class of spin-devices and extend the possibilities for spintronic applications, typically limited to magnetoresistive effects. Specifically, this proposal will help to critically evaluate the feasibility of spin interconnects, magneto-logic gates, and spin lasers. The collaborative effort between the groups of Prof. Sipahi and Prof. Zutic in guiding the research of Mr. de Faria Junior and exposing him to a number of theoretical techniques, will be further enhanced by the active interaction with several other leading researchers in the field of spintronics who are directly interested in the proposed topics. | |
