Abstract

Nanostructuration of compounds or their microenvironments plays a decisive role in some spontaneous processes such as materials deterioration or stabilization. Such behavior motivated the start up of a new research theme on the synergic effects on the degradation of painting materials (Fapesp 02/13865-5 e 03/07315-5) and cultural heritage (Fapesp 08/56127-0 e 11/13760-8) which includes the present Project. The investigation here proposed aims at the investigation of inorganic pigments (hematite, ghoetite and magnetite) and dyes (indigo, indigo carmine, carmine, alizarin, purpurin, luteolin and bixin). In the case of pigments, the goal is to study how nanostructuration and interaction with the environment affect their properties and interfere with their chemical reactivity. In the case of dyes, the investigation is focused on their interaction with inorganic matrices (montmorillonite, vermiculite, kaolinite, laponite, palygorskita and sepiolite) and how it affects their stability. Such information is important to enlarge our understanding on the factors that improve the chemical stability of dyes in pré-colombian textiles. Therefore, the main Project's target is the understanding of the aspects that affect the chemical reactivity in the considered systems (dyes and pigments of archaeological interest), thus enlarging the knowledge on the technical capabilities of some South American pre-colombian cultures.
