The French B. L. Garnier was a prominent book editor of Rio de Janeiro in the nineteenth century, being responsible, among other activities, for the publication of RevistaPopular(1859-1862). Among several works published, national and foreign, were published in these serials, the work "A massambu" by the Brazilian Duarte Paranhos Schudel. Given that the magazine was circulated during a period of strong discussion on the construction of Brazilian nationality, we analyze this serial in which national and regional issues play a central role. The reading of the serial in its original supporter, in the pages of Revista Popular - allows us to observe the relationships and tensions between the fictional text, the articles published in the sections, and especially the images of European origin published in the volumes which the story was published. We seek, therefore, a denser nineteenth-century nationalism comprehension, considering a Brazilian narrative in its relations with a periodical edited by a Frenchman with imported text and images. This research project included in the theme "The transatlantic movement of the print - the globalization of culture in the nineteenth century" (2011/07342-9), aims to understand a little more about the domestic and foreign relations in the construction of Brazilian nationalism.(AU)
