Abstract

Anther glands occur in a small number of angiosperm families. The tribe Mimoseae, Leguminosae family, detain the most records for this structure, present in almost all representatives. The glands are multicellular, usually composed of a stalk and a multicellular secretory head which displays great morphological diversity. Hypotheses regarding the function performed by the glands are associated with pollination, either through production of substances that act as food reward for pollinators or adherent substances that adhere the pollen to the body of the animal visitors. The chemical nature of the compounds produced by such structures is hardly known, consisting in the literature reports of production of hydrophobic substances, phenolic compounds and carbohydrates. The origin of the glands was not studied and therefore it is not known whether they are homologous structures in the group or the result of adaptive convergence. The objectives of the study are: (1) study in detail the morphological diversity of glands present in anthers from its origin to the post-secretory stage in Mimoseae species, (2) analyze the chemical composition of the exudates associated with field observations of the flower, to assign functions to the gland, and (3) compare the morphology of the anther gland between the species of genera placed in different clades in the phylogenetic tree proposed for the tribe in order to infer whether the glands are homologous or homeoplastic in the tribe.
